September 28:

1968-Peter McParland, Delroy Scott and Kaiser "Boy Boy" Motaung score as the Atlanta Chiefs capture the North American Soccer League championship with a 3-0 win over the San Diego Toros at Atlanta Stadium.

1968-Clive Toye resigns as General Manager of the Baltimore Bays, leading to speculation that he may become Commissioner of the North American Soccer League.

1983-Ron Futcher scores two goals as the Tulsa Roughnecks take their best 2 of 3 series with the Montreal Manic with a 2-0 win at Skelley Stadium.

1984-Pato Margetic scores two goals as the Chicago Sting defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps in the third NASL semifinal match in front of 10,139 at Comiskey Park.

1984-The Cleveland Force file a lawsuit against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Dallas Sidekicks and player agent Francisco Marcos over the MISL rights to Tatu.

1990-Ted Eck scores for the MLS Select Team, while Bruce Murray finds the net for the U.S. National Team as the squads play to a 1-1 exhibition draw in front of 10,161 at Arrowhead Stadium.

1993-The San Diego Sockers defeat the Dallas Sidekicks 6-3 in Game 1 of the CISL Championship Series.

1994-Giampaulo Pedroso scores the game winning goal as the Dallas Sidekicks defeat the Last Vegas Dustdevils 10-4 in game one of the CISL Championship series. 

1999-Ante Razov and Dema Kovalenko score as the Chicago Fire defeat Joe Public 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in Las Vegas.

2000-Dagny Mellgren scores the game winning goal as Norway captures the Olympic Gold medal with a 3-2 win over the United States in Sydney.

2005-Ground is broken for the Colorado Rapids’ new stadium in Commerce City, Colorado.

2005- Herculez Gomez scores in the 25th minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 victory over F.C. Dallas in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final at the Home Depot Center.  

2011-After a three-month dry spell, Marco Pappa regains his scoring touch for the Chicago Fire, netting all three goals in a critical 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake in front of a record crowd of 20,762 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

2011- A stoppage time goal by Juninho gives the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over Monarcas Morelia in a CONCACAF Champions League game at The Home Depot Center.

2012-Graham Zusi scores both goals as Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City sew up a spot in the MLS postseason and close to within two points of Supporters Shield leaders San Jose with a 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire at Livestrong Sporting Park.

2014-Landon Donovan assists on three goals to tie the career MLS record, and Robbie Keane scores two goals as the LA Galaxy blank the New York Red Bulls 4-0 at the StubHub Center.

2016-Lloyd Sam, Lamar Neagle and Alvaro Saborio all score after the 70th minute as DC United pulls away from Columbus Crew SC 3-0 at RFK Stadium.

2016-Matt VanOekel makes five saves to tie Romuald Peiser's NASL record 14 shutouts as FC Edmonton plays to a 0-0 draw with the Jacksonville Armada at Community First Park.
