THIS DAY IN SOCCER HISTORY 

September 12: 

1926-A.C. Sparta of Prague defeats the New York Giants 6-0 in front of 7,000 at the New York Oval.

1937-The United States loses to Mexico 7-2 in the first of a three-game series in Mexico City.

1937-FC Barcelona defeats a team selected from American Soccer League club's St. Mary's Celtics and Brooklyn Hispano 4-3 at Commercial Field in Brooklyn.

1978-Gerd Mueller scores three first half goals as the New York Cosmos fall to Bayern Munich 7-1 at Olympiastadion in Munich.

1978--The USMNT loses to Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in West Germany, while the U.S. Olympic Team falls 2-0 to Mexico in the President's Cup tournament  in Kwangju, South Korea.

1979-The Major Indoor Soccer League awards an expansion franchise to the Detroit Lightning for the 1979-80 season.

1981-Kaz Deyna's penalty kick gives the San Diego Sockers a 2-1 win over the Chicago Sting in the first game of their best of three playoff series at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

1981-Giorgio Chinaglia scores two goals as the New York Cosmos edge the Fort Lauderdale Strikers 4-3 in the first game of their NASL semifinal series at Lockhart Stadium.

1983-The Montreal Manic take a 1-0 shootout decision at Olympic Stadium to eliminate the New York Cosmos from the playoffs, two games to none.

1983-Neill Roberts' goal with 3:15 left gives the Toronto Blizzard a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps, forcing a third game in the NASL playoff series.

1989-The Western Soccer League's Seattle Storm announces it has filed a civil suit against the Major Indoor Soccer League's St. Louis Storm, for trade name infringement.

2007- Christian Gomez has a goal and an assist to lead D.C. United a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at RFK Stadium.

2007-The Collinsville City Council approves a development project that would include a stadium for a proposed St. Louis Major League Soccer franchise.

2009- Dwayne De Rosario has a goal and an assist to lead Toronto FC past the Colorado Rapids 3-2   before 20,521 at BMO Field.

2009-Jeff Cunningham scores two goals and assists on two more as FC Dallas pummels the Los Angeles Galaxy 6-3  at the Home Depot Center.

2010- Women's Professional Soccer announces that Commissioner Tonya Antonucci will leave her position effective at the end of the month. She was forced out by owners wrangling to take further control of league operations in the wake of heavy financial losses and the folding of two teams within the last year.

2012-The Chicago Fire survive  a second-half letdown and vault  into second place over the New York Red Bulls in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win over Toronto FC at BMO Field. The loss officially eliminates Toronto (5-17-6, 21 points) from playoff contention.

2014-Chivas USA extends its winless streak to 10 games, surrendering a pair of first-half goals and falling 4-0 to Sporting Kansas City at the StubHub Center.

2015-Kei Kamara scores two goals in five minutes to lead Columbus Crew SC to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union  at PPL Park.

2015-Rafael Castillo scores both goals as the San Antonio Scorpions defeat the Indy Eleven 2-0 in  at Toyota Field.
