October 31:

1926-Bill Paterson scores two goals as the host Fall River Marksmen defeat the New York Giants 5-2.

1972-Efforts to land a North American Soccer League franchise in Orlando are set aside after no local investor is found.

1974-Tom McCloskey, the owner of the Philadelphia Atoms, announces he will sell the soccer team after being awarded a National Football League expansion franchise for Tampa.

1974-Chicago commodities broker Lee Stern is awarded an NASL expansion team which will be called the Sting.

1974-San Jose is awarded the first NASL neutral site championship, to be played August 23, 1975 at Spartan Stadium. The Earthquakes are also named hosts of the league's indoor championship at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on March 16.

2000-The WUSA grants approval for the Orlando franchise to move to North Carolina.

2004-Matt Reis saves two Columbus Crew penalty kicks as the New England Revolution advance to the MLS Eastern Conference finals with a 1-1 tie.

2006- The U.S. Women's National Team gets spectacular first-half finishes from Kristine Lilly and Natasha Kai to defeat Australia, 2-0, in its second Group B match of the 2006 Peace Queen Cup.

 2006- A little more than a year after being fired by the MetroStars, Bob Bradley is named MLS Coach of the Year for transforming Chivas USA from league laughing stock to a third-place regular-season finish in the Western Conference. Bradley becomes the first two-time winner of the award, having earned the honor in 1998 when the expansion Chicago Fire captured the MSL Cup in its first year of existence.

2009- Robbie Findley's 88th-minute goal gives fourth-seeded Real Salt Lake a 1-0 win over the #1 seed Columbus Crew in the MLS Eastern Conference semifinal at Rio Tinto Stadium, and a 1-0 aggregate lead in the two game series..

2010- Edson Buddle volleys a 38-yard shot inside the far post to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 victory  over Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS Western Conference semifinal series opener at Qwest Field.

2013-Mallory Pugh leads the way with two goals as the U.S. Under-17 Women's National Team opens play at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championship with an 8-0 rout of Trinidad Tobago at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

2013-Will Bruin scores twice to lead the fourth-seeded Houston Dynamo to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact in an MLS Eastern Conference play-in game at BBVA Compass Stadium.

2015- The Ottawa Fury FC closed out the NASL regular season with a 12-match unbeaten streak with a 1-1 draw with the Atlanta Silverbacks at Silverbacks Park.

2015- Raul and Sebastia Guenzatti scored goals four minutes apart early in the second half  as the New York Cosmos clinch  top seed  in the North American Soccer League playoffs by recording a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies before a crowd of 5,171 at Shuart Stadium.
