October 23:

1926-Anton Janda scores three goals as Sparta A.C. of Prague blanks the Chicago team of the same name, 9-0 at Cermak Park.

1984-As part an ongoing cost-cutting effort aimed at saving the foundering club, the Tampa Bay Rowdies sell star midfielder Wes McLeod to the New York Cosmos for an undisclosed sum.

2004-Abby Wambach becomes the fourth player in U.S. Women's National Team history to score five goals in a game in a 5-0 win over Ireland at Reliant Stadium.

2004-Avery John's goal gives the New England Revolution a 1-0 win, ending the Columbus Crew's 18- game unbeaten streak in a playoff game at Foxboro Stadium.

2005-Abby Wambach scores two goals and Kristine Lilly connects for her 105th career goal, tying Michelle Akers for second on the all-time U.S. scoring list, as the U.S. Women's National Team records a 3-0 victory over Mexico in Charleston, S.C. The USA finishes the year at 8-0-1 without allowing a goal.

2010-Dwayne De Rosario scores twice to lead Toronto FC to a season-ending 3-2 win over DC United at RFK Stadium. A crowd of 18,071 is on hand to bid farewell to United star forward Jaime Moreno, an MLS original whose 39th-minute penalty kick in his final game lifts him back into the all-time MLS scoring lead with 133 goals.

2010-Birahim Diop's hat trick and Eduardo's late own-goal propels the Kansas City Wizards past the playoff-bound San Jose Earthquakes 4-1 in the season finale at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

2010-Alvaro Saborio scores twice in stoppage time to lift Real Salt Lake into a 2-2 draw with the Colorado Rapids at Dicks Sporting Goods Park.

2011-The Houston Dynamo beat up on a team of LA Galaxy reserves 3-1 in the regular season finale at Robertson Stadium, lifting themselves out of the wild card pack and into second place in the MLS East heading into the postseason.

2012- Abby Wambach and Heath Tobin each score, but Germany equalizes after both U.S. goals as the teams play to a 2-2 tie in front of 18,870 rain-soaked spectators at Rentschler Field.

2013-Alvaro Saborio converts a penalty kick and Joao Plata strikes three minutes later early in the second half to send Real Salt Lak to a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA and into the lead for the MLS Supporters Shield at Rio Tinto Stadium.

2013-The  Orange County (Fla.)  Board of Commissioners vote  to provide $20 million in funding toward a soccer stadium which would be built a block west of the Amway Center in downtown Orlando.

2015-After being rebuffed in their efforts to build a soccer stadium in downtown Minneapolis near Target Field, Minnesota United FC  reaches an agreement with the city of St. Paul to build a stadium in that city. The $120 million stadium will be privately financed by the team, and then will be publicly owned. The team is however asking for a permanent property tax exemption for the site.

2016- New York City FC avoids playing a mid-week knockout-round game in the Major League Soccer playoffs by recording a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Crew in the season finale for both teams  at Yankee Stadium.

 2016-The New York Red Bulls clinched the Eastern Conference championship with a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union as Bradley Wright-Phillips secures his second Major League Soccer Golden Boot by scoring the first goal of the match.

2016-Carli Lloyd scores two goals to lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a 5-1 win over Switzerland in front of 23,400 fans at U.S. Bank Stadium, the largest crowd to watch the U.S. Women in the state of Minnesota.
