October 17: 

1926-Sparta A.C. of Prague defeats the St. Louis All-Stars 5-3  in front of 6,100 at Sportman's Park.

1948-Henry Merlo scores the game winner as Simpkins Ford, with an entirely St. Louis-born team, captures the U.S. Open Cup with a 3-2 win over Brookhattan at Sportsmen's Park.

1979-Washington D.C. and R.F.K. Stadium are selected as hosts of the 1980 NASL Soccer Bowl.

1979-Giorgio Chinaglia scores three goals and Dennis Tueart the other two as the New York Cosmos defeat the Malaysian National Team 5-0 in Kuala Lumpur.

1984-Gonzalo Farfan and Dante Jaurez score from Mexico in a 2-1 win over the United States in a friendly at Neza Stadium in Mexico City. Perry van der Beck scores the U.S. goal.

1995-MLS unveils its team logos and uniforms at an event at New York's Palladium night club.

1998-Darren Tilley scores all three goals as the Rochester Rhinos defeat the Minnesota Thunder 3-1 to capture the A-League championship in front of 13,772 at Frontier Field.

1999-Stern John scores both goals as the Columbus Crew defeat the Tampa Bay Mutiny 2-0 in the first game of their MLS Eastern Conference semifinals.

1999-Goals by Ezra Henrickson, Greg Vanney, and Cobi Jones give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rapids in the first game of the MLS Western Conference semifinals in front of 16,307 at the Rose Bowl.

2001-Troy Dayak scores in overtime to give the San Jose Earthquakes a spot in MLS Cup with a 1-0 win over the Miami Fusion at Lockhart Stadium.

2001-Mauricio Cienfuegos scores eight minutes into overtime, giving the LA Galaxy a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field, and a spot in the MLS cup for the third time in six season.

2005-The U.S. Women's National Team battles  Australia t to a 0-0 tie at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif.

2007 - Michael Bradley scores his first international goal in the 86th minute to lift the U.S. to a rare win on European soil, 1-0 over Switzerland.

2007- Kristine Lilly, Abby Wambach, Natasha Kai and Carli Lloyd each scores as the United States defeats Mexico 4-0 in front of 10,006 fans at PGE Park.

2012- Seattle Sounders FC play  shorthanded for a full hour, but still manage to snap Real Salt Lake's four-game winning streak with a scoreless draw  at Century Link Field.

2014- Tobin Heath scores two goals and Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Whitney Engen each add one as the USA takes sole position of first place in Group 1 of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with  5-0 win over Guatemala at Toyota Park.

2014-Goalkeeper Nick Rimando makes six saves to help Real Salt Lake hang on for a scoreless draw against the fired-up Portland Timbers at rain-soaked Providence Park.

2015-The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team is defeated 2-0 by Nigeria in the teams' opening match of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
