October 12: 

1884--The American Football Association is formed to promote the “association football” game.

1952- In an American Soccer League doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, the Philadelphia Americans defeat  the New York Americans 4-3 and the Brookhattan Galicia defeat  Brooklyn Hispano 7-3 in front of  5,737.

1977-Buzz Parsons and Bob Lenarduzzi score as Canada beats Suriname 2-1 in a World Cup Qualifying game in Monterrey, Mexico.

1980--Goals by Seninho and Giorgio Chinaglia give the New York Cosmos a 2-0 win over Napoli in the 5th game of the 12-game European tour.

1981-The Fort Lauderdale Strikers gave up three second half goals, all to Manny Hatzioanidis, as they played to a 4-4 draw with AEK in Athens.

1991-Michelle Akers and Kristine Lilly score as the USWNT defeats China 2-0 at George Mason University in Virginia.

1994-Major League Soccer announces it will delay its launch by one year, and begin play in 1996, not 1995.

1996-Raul Diaz Arce scores in the 82nd minute to give DC United a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Mutiny to earn a spot in the MLS Cup game.

1997-Sean Henderson's goal gives the Colorado Rapids a 1-0 win over the Dallas Burn in the first game of their best-of-three Western Conference Championship series.

1997-Tony Sanneh scores the game winner with three seconds left in the second half, as DC United staves off a comeback from the Columbus Crew for a 3-2 win in the first game of their three-game MLS Eastern Conference series.

1997-Carlo Corrazin and Alex Bunbury score to give Canada a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Mexico in Edmonton.

2002-The New England Revolution gets goals from Steve Ralston and Wolde Harris, then holds off a late surge to tie the Columbus Crew 2-2 in the third game of their first to five points semifinal series.

 2002-Hector Marinaro scores a pair of goals, extending his scoring streak to 45 games, as the Cleveland Force defeat  the Baltimore Blast 10-9 at the Cleveland State Convocation Center.

2003-Nia Kuenzer scores on a header eight minutes into extra time to give Germany the Women's World Cup championship with a 2-1 win over Sweden at the Home Depot Center.

2005- Kyle Martino and Taylor Twellman score as the U.S., having already qualified, closes out its World Cup qualifying campaign  with a 2-0 victory over Panama at Gillette Stadium.

 2008-Brian McBride scores twice to help the Chicago Fire salvage a 2-2 draw, and book a guaranteed spot in the MLS playoffs, with the conference-leading Columbus Crew  in front of 14,994 at Toyota Park.

2010-The U.S. Men's National Team plays to a 0-0 draw with Colombia in front of an announced crowd of 8,823 at PPL Park. 

2010-Mike Fucito and Nate Jaqua each score  in the first 18 minutes   as Seattle Sounders FC beat CD Chivas de Guadalajara, 3-1, in an international friendly   in front of 41,047 at Qwest Field.

2011-FC Dallas  snaps a four-game losing streak a Daniel Cruz's 53rd-minute goal delivers them to the postseason with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.

2011-Second-half substitute Jaime Ayovi breaks a scoreless tie in the 79th minute to lift Ecuador to a 1-0 victory over the United States in an international friendly at Red Bull Arena.

2013-Mike Magee has a goal and an assist, and Jalil Anibaba scores his first goal of the season as the Chicago Fire notched a 3-2 win and eliminate FC Dallas from the postseason. 

2014- Taylor Kemp scores his first career goal and Fabian Espindola adds his 10th of the season as D.C. United defeats the Houston Dynamo 3-1  to move within a point of winning the MLS Eastern Conference regular season crown.

2016-Jon Busch makes two saves to post his ninth shutout of the season, as Indy Eleven plays to a 0-0 draw against the Jacksonville Armada at Community First Park.
