THIS DAY IN SOCCER HISTORY 

October 3: 

1926--A crowd of 30,000, the largest to ever see a soccer game in Chicago, sees A.C. Sparta of Prague defeat the All-Stars of the Midwest League 1-0 at Soldiers' Field.

1976-Goalkeeper Arnie Mausser turns in a stellar performance as the United States and Mexico play to a 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw in front of an LA Coliseum record crowd of 33,171.

1978-Major Indoor Soccer League co-founders Earl Foreman and Ed Tepper announce six cities for the league's inaugural season--Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

1978-The Houston Hurricane sign American star Kyle Rote Jr. to a three year contract worth a reported $500,000.

1978-After one season in Denver, the Caribous of Colorado are sold to an Atlanta group headed by Dick Cecil and Al Thornwell. The team will be called the Chiefs.

1993-The Dallas Sidekicks defeat the San Diego Sockers 5-4 in Game 3 of the CISL Championship Series to win the title. Eric Dade scores the game winning goal with less than three minutes remaining. Tatu is named series MVP having scored seven goals.

1997-Jean Harbor scores two goals, including the game winner, and Dick McCormick adds a goal and two assists as the Seattle SeaDogs down  the Portland Pride 8-2 in game one of their CISL playoff series.

 1997-Arturo Castelan scores two goals and Ziad Allan nets the game winner in the Houston Hotshots 6-4 win over the Indiana Twisters in game one of their playoff series.

1999-Jason Kreis scores two goals and assists on the game winner by Richard Farrer to give the Dallas Burn a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the LA Galaxy at the Cotton Bowl. With the assist, Kreis becomes the first player to record 15 goals and 15 assists in one MLS season.

1999-Danielle Fotopoulos scores two goals as the United States beats South Korea 5-0 in the opening game of the U.S. Women's Cup at Columbus Crew Stadium.

2004- Midfielder Kristine Lilly becomes only the fifth player and third American in women's soccer to reach 100 goals as she scores in the 67th minute of a 5-0 victory over New Zealand in the U.S. Fan Celebration Tour at Civic Stadium in Portland, Ore.

 2007-Pat Noonan has a goal and two assists, and rookie Wells Thompson delivers the coup de grace in the 57th minute as the New England Revolution capture the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas in front of 10,618 at Pizza Hut Park.

2009- The Columbus Crew's 24 game unbeaten streak at Crew Stadium comes to an end  with a 1-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC.

2009-Landon Donovan delivers the game winner as the Los Angeles Galaxy moved close to their first MLS postseason since 2005 with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire in front of 21,679 at the Home Depot Center.

2010-David Beckham curls a 21-yard free kick into the upper corner of the goal in the 39th minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over Chivas USA and the 2010 SuperClasico championship at the Home Depot Center.

2012- Jack McInerney has a goal and an assist as the Philadelphia Union surprise the Chicago Fire 3-1   at Toyota Park.

2014- D.C. United clinches a playoff spot with a 0-0 draw with  Sporting Kansas City at RFK Stadium.

2015- Goals from Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore along with an own goal in stoppage time give Toronto FC a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union 3-1  at BMO Field.

 2015-Stefano explodes for three goals to lead the Fort Lauderdale Strikers to a 4-2 win over the San Antonio Scorpions at Toyota Field.
