THIS DAY IN SOCCER HISTORY  

 November 1:

1936-The Boston Celtics, champions of Northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, defeat Maccabee of Palestine 3-2 at National League Park.

1936-After winning four games in a row to open the American Soccer League season, Brooklyn Hispano falls 4-2 to the Scots-Americans at Hawthorne Field.

1966-Scunthorpe United manager Freddie Goodwin resigns to become coach of the New York Generals of the National Professional Soccer League.

1968-The North American Soccer League owners vote to suspend play for three years and instead field a touring all-star team to play foreign opposition. Eight participating teams, Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, Oakland, St. Louis and Washington back the plan, which calls for a minimum of three games in each city.

1969-The Dallas Tornado falls to Dover Town 6-1 in their final tour game in Great Britain.

1976-John Best, former coach of the Seattle Sounders is named General Manager of the Vancouver Whitecaps, signing a three year contract.

1976-Columbia Broadcasting System decides not pick up the remainder of its three-year deal to televise the North American Soccer League.

1978-Giorgio Chinaglia scores the only goal before becoming involved in a fight that sees three players ejected as the New York Cosmos play Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in Guayaquil, Ecudaor.

1980-Goals by Robert Iarusci and Branko Segota give Canada a 2-1 win over the United States in a World Cup qualifier in front of 13,598 at Empire Stadium. Greg Villa scores for the U.S. in the final minute of the game.

1996-The Edmonton Drillers win their NPSL debut, 11-7 over Toronto. Sipho Sibiya scores the first Drillers goal, assisted by Sergio Maione, at 1:38

1997- 1996-97 NPSL Rookie of the Year Jason Dunn scores four two-point goals, including the game-winner, to lift the Wichita Wings over the Kansas City Attack 16-14

1997-The Milwaukee Wave rally from a 17-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Cleveland Crunch 28-23. Milwaukee's Michael Richardson and Cleveland's Zoran Karic both score 10 points.

2007-The Chicago Fire advanced to the Eastern Conference final of the MLS Cup playoffs with a 2-2 draw against D.C. United at R.F.K. Stadium. The Fire won the earlier leg 1-0 and advance on the basis of a 3-2 aggregate score line.

2008- Angela Hucles, Heather O'Reilly and Lindsay Tarpley each score as the U.S. win their 30th game in of the year,  defeating South Korea 3-1 at the University of Richmond.

2008- Kei Kamara scores a late goal to lift the Houston Dynamo to a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls in the first leg of their two-leg Western Conference Semifinal Series at Giants Stadium.

2008- Yura Movsisyan scores as Real Salt Lake wins the first playoff game in franchise history, 1-0 over Chivas USA at Rio Tinto Stadium.

2008- The man-down Kansas City Wizards hold on to earn a 1-1 draw against the top-seeded Columbus Crew  at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Leg 1 of the MLS Eastern Conference Semifinal Series.

2009- Shalrie Joseph scores in the 75th minute to give the New England Revolution a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire in Game One of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Gillette Stadium.

2009- In a game marred by errors, cross-stadium rivals Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy drew 2-2 in the first game of their MLS West semifinal series at the Home Depot Center. 

2009- Jack McInerney's first-half goal proves the difference as the U.S. Under-17 men reach the second round of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with a 1-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates at Gateway International Stadium in their final match in Group E.

 2012- Mike Magee and Landon Donovan score as the LA Galaxy survive an early scare and rally to defeat Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-1 in the MLS Western Conference knockout match at the Home Depot Center.

2014- With Charlie Davies leading the way with a pair of spectacular goals the New England Revolution take early control of the Eastern Conference semifinals with a commanding 4-2 road win over the Columbus Crew  at Crew Stadium.

2014- Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo repeatedly comes up big, especially in the second half, and the Los Angeles Galaxy escape their playoff opener  with a scoreless draw in difficult conditions at Real Salt Lake.

2015- Dax McCarty heads home the deciding goal in the 72nd minute as the New York Red Bulls seize  the early advantage in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against DC United with a 1-0 win at RFK Stadium.

2015-The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps play  to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals in front of a sellout crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park.

2015- Clint Dempsey's second half goal gives the Seattle Sounders FC a 2-1 win over DC Dallas in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals at CenturyLink Field.

2015- On goals by  Marco Donadel and Johan Venegas the Montreal Impact rallies past Columbus Crew SC in the first leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal series  at Stade Saputo.

2015- A late goal by Marlon Freitas gives the Fort Lauderdale Strikers all they need  to defeat the Jacksonville Armada FC 1-0 at Community First park, and clinch a spot in The Championship, knocking out the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the process.

2016- Veteran defender Rafa Marquez scores the game-winner in the 89th minute to boost Mexico to a 2-1 triumph over the United States in a World Cup Qualifier before a capacity crowd of 24,650 at MAPFRE Stadium.
