August 20

1916-The United States plays its first full international game, a 3-2 win over Sweden in Stockholm.

1971-Buzz Demling, Al Trost and John Carenza score as the United States defeats Barbados 2-1 in an Olympic Qualifier in Bridgetown. The U.S. will have to play a playoff with El Salvador to qualify for the 1972 games.

1972-Canada defeats the United States 3-2 in a World Cup qualifier played in St. John's Newfoundland.

1972-Joe Ogjanack scored with five minutes left to give the New York Greeks a 1-0 American Soccer League playoff win over the Delaware Wings at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, NY.

1976-The Tampa Bay Rowdies eliminate the New York Cosmos from the playoffs with a 3-1 win in front of a league playoff record crowd of 36,863 at Tampa Stadium.

1980-Johan Cruyff assists on the Washington Diplomats first two goals, and scored the fourth in a 4-1 win over the New England Tea Men at R.F.K. Stadium.

1982-The MISL Pittsburgh Spirit and Cleveland Force play to a 3-3 draw in an outdoor game in front of 2,100 at the Rubber Bowl in Akron, Ohio.

1982-Andrew Parkinson's second goal of the game, in the 89th minute gives the Montreal Manic a 3-1 win over the New York Cosmos at Olympic Stadium.

1982-The NASL and MISL jointly announce that the Chicago Sting and San Jose Earthquakes will play in the MISL in the 1982-83 season.

1982-Sonny Van Arnem, the owner of the American Soccer League's Detroit Express, announces that pending league approval, he has reached a deal to purchase the NASL's Edmonton Drillers and move them to the Motor City.

1993-The Portland Pride's Chris Scotti scores seven goals in a 13-8 win over the Houston Hotshots.

1995-Preki scores three goals and registered six assists for his second nine point game in a row, in the San Jose Grizzlies 13-7 win over the Pittsburgh Stingers.

2004-Midfielder Shannon Boxx shuffles a pass to Abby Wambach, who calmly touches it into an open goal in the 59th minute for the game-winner in the US WNT's 2-1 Olympic quarterfinal victory over Japan in Thessaloniki, Greece.

2005-Rookie forward Scott Sealy scores twice to power the Kansas City Wizards to a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire, lifting the Wizards into second place in the Eastern Conference and extending their winning streak to four games.

2006-Real Salt Lake wins a club record fourth straight game, defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-1 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Jeff Cunningham has a goal and an assist.

2008-The Colorado Rapids fire Head Coach Fernando Clavijo.

2008-The New England Revolution climb back atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 2-1 win over D.C. United  in front of 14,962 at Gillette Stadium. Taylor Twellman and Jeff Larentowicz score for the Revs.

2008-Carlos Bocanegra scores the only goal the United States MNT needs to post its first-ever World Cup Qualifying win in Guatemala, a match in Guatemala otherwise marred by fouls, yellow cards, red cards and a bloody injury to defender Eddie Lewis.

2011-Robbie Keane scores in the 21st minute of his MLS debut, leading the LA Galaxy to a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at the Home Depot Center.

2011-The Philadelphia Independence ousts magicJack from the WPS playoffs with a 2-0 win at PPL Park, getting goals from Amy Rodriguez and Tasha Kai.

2012-Maya Hayes strikes for a second-half hat-trick to lead the U.S. Women to a 4-0 Group D victory over Ghana in its opening match at the FIFA Under-20 Womens World Cup at Hiroshima Big Arch Stadium.

2014-The U.S. Women’s National team gets goals from Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Christen Press and Abby Wambach in a 4-1 win over Switzerland played in front of a sell-out crowd of 9,992 at WakeMed Soccer Park.

2014-Lindsi Cutshall scores the only goal of the game giving Sky Blue FC a 1-0 win over the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League regular season finale at Yurcak Field.

2016-The Chicago Fire ends its epic 36-game road winless streak in decisive fashion, blanking the Montreal Impact 3-0 at Stade Saputo for their first victory away from Toyota Park since July 12, 2014.
