April 18,
1915-The Brooklyn Celtics' dream of winning two cup competitions comes to an end as they fall to the Kearney Scots 1-0 in the final of the American Cup. They face Bethlehem Steel, who they beat in the semifinal of the American Cup, in the final of the National Challenge Cup.

1954-Kutis and the New York Americans play to a 1-1 draw in the first game of the U.S. Open Cup championship at Oakland Stadium in St. Louis.

1967-Willie Roy scores the only goal as the Chicago Spurs defeat the Toronto Falcons 1-0 in front of only 816 at chilly Comiskey Park.

1971-In a rematch of the NASL's 1970 championship game, the Rochester Lancers and Washington Darts play to a 1-1 draw.

1975-After spending the offseason on loan with Dundalk in Ireland, all-star defender Bobby Smith ends a holdout and signs a new contract with the Philadelphia Atoms.

1976-Dave Clements scores the only goal as the New York Cosmos open the season with a 1-0 win over the Miami Toros in front of a sellout crowd of 9,457 at Tamiami Stadium.

1982-Chico Borja has a goal and an assist as the New York Cosmos beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-0 in front of their second largest opening day crowd, 52,436 at Giants Stadium.

1992-The San Diego Sockers come from behind twice to defeat the Baltimore Blat 4-3 to advance to the MISL finals.

1996- Goran Hunjak scores four goals and Brian Haynes three to lead host Kansas City Attack past the Cleveland Crunch 22-17 in the second game of the NPSL Final series.

2008-Byron Alvarez scores four two-point goals, including the game-winner at 7:37 of the fourth quarter, to help Monterrey La Raza rally past the regular season champion Detroit Ignition 15-11 in the MISL semifinal series opener at Arena Monterrey.

2009-Kelly Smith, Christine Latham and Angela Hucles all score  as the Boston Breakers take a 3-1 win over the Washington Freedom at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

2009-Brian McBride tallies two early goals to give the Chicago Fire a 2-0 lead but Josh Wolff tallies two late goals, helping the Kansas City Wizards to a 2-2 draw.

2010-Abby Wambach has a goal and two assists as the Washington Freedom beat up on the expansion Atlanta Beat 3-1  before 2,665 at the Maryland Soccerplex.

2010-Conor Casey scores two penalty kicks, and Jeff Larentowicz notches the game-winner as the Colorado Rapids batter  Toronto FC 3-1   at Dicks Sporting Goods Park.

2012-Sporting Kansas City extends their season-opening win streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place.

2015-Marcos Senna converts a first-half penalty kick and Leo Fernandes scores his second goal of the season to power the New York Cosmos to a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies in their home opener at Shuart Stadium.

2015-Christen Press scored two goals and adds an assist on Jen Hoy's first half tally to lead the Chicago Red Stars to a 3-2 win over the Seattle Reign FC at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
