THIS DAY IN SOCCER HISTORY 

April 3, 
1921-Robins Dry Dock defeats Bunker Hill Football Club 8-3 in a National Soccer League game played at Todd Field in Brooklyn.

1925-Members of the ASL Champion Boston Soccer Club, en route to St. Louis, meet President Calvin Coolidge at the White House.

1932-After winning titles as the Fall River Marksmen and the New York Yankees, the New Bedford Whalers defeat Stix, Baer & Fuller of St. Louis 5-2 to capture their third straight National Challenge Cup Championship  in front of 14,552 at Sportsmen's Park .

1968-Pepe Fernandez scores two goals to lead the San Diego Toros to a 2-1 win over the Boston Beacons in front of 1,817 at Balboa Stadium.

1974-The Rhode Island Oceaneers reach agreement to play at Pierce Memorial Field in East Providence.

1978-The San Jose Earthquakes win the Portland Invitational Soccer Tournament after beating the Minnesota Kicks 1-0 in a shootout. Earlier in the evening, the Kicks edged Vancouver 1-0 and the Earthquakes beat the Timbers 2-1 in 45 minute games.

1980-The ownership and name of the MISL's Denver Avalanche are unveiled.

1999-Hector Marinaro scores eight points to win his sixth NPSL scoring title and help host Cleveland Crunch win the Central Division and clinch the league's best record with a 21-12 win over the Florida Thundercats.

2007-The Chicago Fire sign Mexican international Cuauhtmoc Blanco as the team's first Designated Player.

2008-Dino Delevski scores three goals to lead Monterrey LaRaza to a 16-12 win over his former team, the Philadelphia KiXX. The loss knocks Philadelphia, the defending Major Indoor Soccer League champions, out of playoff contention.

2008-Tomasz Frankowski has two goals and Chad Barrett and Cuauhtemoc Blanco each have a goal and an assist as the Chicago Fire cruise past the man-down New England Revolution 4-0 at Toyota Park.

2008-David Beckham and Landon Donovan each set up goals for one another as the LA Galaxy cruises to a 2-0 win over the expansion San Jose Earthquakes at the Home Depot Center.

2011-Caleb Folan scores twice to lead the Colorado Rapids  to a 4-1 win over DC United  at wintry Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

2012-Carli Lloyd, Shannon Boxx and Amy Rodriguez scored on set plays as the USWNT  defeats Brazil 3-0 in its second and final match of the Kirin Challenge Cup at Fukuda Denshi Arena.

2014-Michael Bradley and Chris Wondolowski tally for the USA in the opening half, but second-half goals by Rafa Marquez and Alan Pulido bring Mexico back  into a 2-2 draw at University of Phoenix Stadium.

2015-Luis Silva returns from his long injury layoff to give D.C. United a 1-0 victory over Orlando City SC with a sensational stoppage-time free kick at the Citrus Bowl.

2016-Juan Arango strikes for two first-half goals to lead the New York Cosmos to a 3-0 win over the Ottawa Fury FC before 5,094 chilly spectators at Shuart Stadium.

2016-In his first game of the season, Kaka scores one goal and sets up two others, leading Orlando City SC to a stunning 4-1 win over the defending champion Portland Timbers at the Citrus Bowl.
