1915-Bethlehem Steel wins the National Challenge Cup with a 3-1 win over Brooklyn Celtic at Taylor Field in South Bethlehem, Pa.
1967-The Pittsburgh Phantoms fire head coach Janos Bedl and name Co Prins the team's third coach just four games into the season. Bedl becomes the first coach in the National Professional Soccer League to be fired.
1968-Warren Archibald scores both goals to lead the New York Generals to a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Bays at Yankee Stadium.
1976-Professional soccer makes its debut in Utah, as the L.A. Skyhawks down the Utah Golden Spikers 1-0 at Rice Stadium.
1980-The Houston Summit franchise moves to Baltimore and is renamed the Blast.
1982-Jan van Beveren makes a team record 17 saves, then stops three more in the shootout, as the Fort Lauderdale Strikes beat the Toronto Blizzard 4-3 at Exhibition Stadium.
1982-Miguel Filardo scores at 5:23 into overtime to give the Baltimore Blast a 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Spirit at the Civic Center, tying their best of three MISL playoff series at 1-1.
1985-MISL Founder and First Commissioner Earl Foreman retires. Former baseball executive and newspaper publisher Francis L. Dale is named his successor.
1991-The Kansas City Comets' David Doyle scores three goals in an 8-6 win over the Cleveland Crunch in game six of the MISL Eastern Division Finals. Hector Marinaro has four goals for Cleveland.
1999-Sigi Schmid wins his first game in his MLS coaching debut, as the LA Galaxy earn a 1-0 decision following a shootout over the NY/NJ MetroStars.
1999-Playing before an SRO crowd of 5,639 at Bethel Park, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds lose their home debut via shootout, falling 3-2 to the Cincinnati Riverhawks after the teams play to a 2-2 tie and go eight rounds in the tiebreaker.
